In 1999, Rudy Ruiz started La Strada Contracting, offering grading, paving and concrete services throughout southern California. In the years since, the Lake Forest company has become an industry leader, specializing in all types of heavy civil construction, from grading and paving to storm drains and sewer systems.
Over its first decade, the company’s primary focus was on grading, paving, curb & gutter work and decorative paving, but Ruiz had visions of expanding the company into pipeline work. Then in 2010, the company acquired key personnel and a sizeable project backlog from a prominent pipeline contractor who was retiring his business.
This opened the door for the expansion Ruiz was looking for, and the pipeline side of the business took off. In 2016, Ruiz partnered with fellow contractor, Chris Anselmo to form La Strada Pipeline. With the two branches working side by side, La Strada was able to offer complete construction services from “both sides of the street” and Ruiz and Anselmo have never been busier.
The benefits of this partnership are passed directly to La Strada’s clients. While the pipeline division is installing underground utilities, superintendents work collaboratively to ensure the most efficient transition from wet utilities to street work. Being able to handle both underground utilities and surface work allows La Strada to save time and keep cost down.
Today the company tackles all types of heavy civil construction, including municipal, industrial and commercial work for both government agencies and private developers. They have the expertise to take on jobs of any size and scope, whether it is a small project or a multi-million dollar development. The company is able to stay ahead of its competitors by maintaining a flexible, hands-on approach and by using creative, client-focused strategies that provide the highest return at the lowest cost.
Ruiz attributes the company’s success to three underlying principles: Value Engineering, Due Diligence, and Safety.
